A little reminder about the purpose of this club

Journal Entry: Wed Jul 1, 2009, 6:00 PM
:spotlight-left:Welcome and Hello! :spotlight-right:

:bookdiva: Love to the club

So if you’ve noticed, the sales and whatnot journal is up. I think my piece I wanted to say about it is sufficiently in there. It’ll stay in there for a while, as well as the example stuff til I think everyone’s either read it or it’s been established long enough for everyone to get used to it. If you have something to say, go read what I wrote in that journal, not just act like you read it, and then comment if you want. If you leave a comment which I feel was addressed in that journal, I’ll refer you plainly to read it without further discussion.

As I stated previously, this club is here to help you with exposure, get your name out there, to try and teach you things and let you know about stuff you might not have been aware of that was here online, etc. But again, this is not a babysitting service. I do put a lot of work into running this so of course I do get fed up with trying to please everyone and it not working quite that way now and then. Though I greatly enjoying doing it so the rewards outweigh the annoyances, but look people, I’m not your mother. Some of you I know that this doesn’t even apply, but others, please keep in mind:

This club is here to augment what you should already be doing for yourself. It’s a leg-up. It’s a resource. It’s a ground where buyers and sellers can come together. And yes, I feel it’s worth reminding everyone of that fact.

I will say it plainly because there are those who indeed whine about not getting commissioned. This is an old statement which also needs to be repeated, I think. We’ve had 2 or 3 people leave a couple months ago. Frankly, if you want out, that’s fine. I’ll gladly remove your stuff without a fuss. I won’t cry any tears over it and my feelings certainly won’t be hurt if you leave. Less work for me. If you don’t like the way things go or you’re not getting the results you want, go elsewhere :) I can’t be the cheerleader for everyone 24/7. I make no results-promises or guarantees about joining up. You alone are in charge of creating a demand for your product. It’s the law of economics. If there isn’t a demand, create one. If there is a demand for something, fill it. That’s how businesses work. In this age of entitlement, everyone thinks things should come easily. I know there are some of you in the club who expect commissions to roll in once you’ve filled out a template and it’s part of our gallery. Please don’t be so naïve. I think it’s wonderful that you’ve got such high hopes but I will not take responsibility for those dreams not coming true and the disillusionment that follows. No one is responsible for your success but yourself. This might seem like a lot of negativity on my end, but I call it reality and I think we could all use a check.

To make people stand out, I’ve created the journals with links to your profiles and the fun crap you do listed there. We have language services, custom fun currency designs, button-makers, fine-artists. Keep telling me stuff to put. I give the tools but not many of you use them :/ And I certainly won’t force you to make things better for yourself. But there are resources here, links, etc. I try to include things I think would help people who don’t know jack about commissioning or would like to get into it. We create new articles, journals, etc. all for your benefit and for easier user-interface. Maybe I’ve been dedicated to making things too easy for everyone. If you’re thinking, “WTF are you talking about? This crap isn’t exactly ‘easy’ to use. Look at this mess. ” Well, if you can remember how the club started, how things used to be, all the crap that didn’t exist before, then you’ll know we have far greater organization than before. We’ve come a very long way in a year. We have nearly 400 member profiles. And I know several of you want “better exposure” for yourself because we have so many. Well, you come up with something that will work fairly for everyone, that is manageable by me to do, and is totally within our realm of doing, I’ll do it in a heartbeat.

Remember boys and girls, I don’t get paid to do any of this. Oh great, now she’s bitching about running the club. I run this club which has exploded with people. There are a lot of you to keep track of, and a lot of people to try and keep happy and therefore, a lot of toes that could potentially get stepped on. Please bear with me as things change. I certainly hope you’re not filled with ideas that everything should run perfect and be perfect right off the bat with new stuff. We’re STILL changing, people. Things will adapt to necessity.

:icononionfailplz:

Honestly, if I could get paid to do this stuff, I’d jump even further in. There are loads of things I’d like to do. I’d love to help people individually set up shops, walk them through properly laying out their pages for maximum exposure, and utilize all the hidden tricks that can amount to a larger difference in the sense of the interwebs. Sadly, there are not enough hours in the day and I cannot do that, even if it’s fun. You wanna pay me for my time, sure, I’ll set you up. But I can’t spread myself too thin over everything. Sorry people. I’m adopting a no-nonsense attitude about this. Pull your own weight when you can, and anything I have control over, come to me and I’ll try and help.

I’m still setting up the FAQ. It would help me, for newer members, if some of you could leave comments as to some things you’ve learned along the way that you didn’t understand when you first joined the club, and had wished there as a quick answer for yourself. Even tiny things. If your comment is about something that now exists that might not have previously, then you don’t need to list it ;) I’ve been doing this for a year (actually one year today I took over the club) so I cannot, as an insider, be fully prepared and write out all the little things that might escape me. I’ve been in the club since it was started. There are less than a handful of you who have been skulking about this club longer than myself. I’d like some fresh insights. And nothing smarmy. If you’re feeling in a smarmy mood, close this deviant art page, and come back later. I don’t currently have the patience for it.

I’ll be updating this thing again soon. I felt this journal was necessary. I know there are mixed sentiments about the new Sales journal. This is pre-emptive damage control. I’m honestly a nice person, but I have a very strong personality and I feel certain things need to be said. Things aren't perfect when they're instituted. Give it time to evolve into the animal it needs to by dictate of necessity. Thanks.

You know I tend to pimp things you guys should be checking out  Like =TheKnowledge1 which teaches neat stuff, and our new affiliate ~TipsAndTricks. Both of these accounts can teach you methods on improving your arts

Also keeping you abreast of what's going on in the community, we have the =deviantARTtimes, and something else you might not have been aware of is the new dA-specific webzine DEVIANCE.

There's also full tutorials inside of it, art from you guys (and btw you can submit stuff to put in it; there are several areas which are fun) and since issue 2 everything is hyperlinked so it goes right to the deviation/deviant/webpage/etc. Another useful thing I think you should check out :devilish: You can download it to get the spreads and keep it on your computer. Learn from this.

If you're new and haven't seen our Contests and Kiribans journal, you might want to check that too. I think I'm going to refresh it at least once a week, if not twice, aside from just refreshing it when I update it. It's a fun journal to take advantage of so I want our new members to get it

You may also want to see the club Etsy Sellers ---> :iconetsysellers: I plug that website enough, and here's an actual club dedicated to it. I KNOW you'll be able to learn from them, if not get yourself more expsoure. Surely they have more info there than I provide you with.

Welcome new members! And updates.

:spotlight-left:Welcome and Hello! :spotlight-right:

:bookdiva: Love to the club
Hello hello, ^ElectrikPinkPirate here with some updates.

First off I want to thank everyone who has been sending me their info to list them in the new journals :) Also for the kind remarks and especially for following my instructions! :faint: Listing your name and your link as i requested is really so helpful, you have no idea. Also thanks too for telling me which of the journals to stick you in. Totally not necessary but very much appreciated the same! (It made it easier but you totally didn't have to!) I know I haven't sent replies to everyone who sent in notes (there were a LOT and apart from dA moderating, it added to my workload so sorry if i didn't get back to ya!).

Everything said in the last journal still flies. So I won't repeat myself here (you can just click "previous journals" and WHAM you're there).

Also for those two new journals (for new friends and watchers, there are quick-ref links in the journal area and the main club page area, which says Journal 1 and Journal 2-- those are what I'm talking about) you guys can tell me new stuff to put O_O I know that there was a time when we had listed linguistics services. I myself am proficient in Latin (as in Catholic Mass, not spanish) as well as a few other languages. I know english for many of you is a second language, and several of you really old members (some of our first members) listed your translation and interpreting services as salable services. If you do a language (i cannot even begin to wonder what you might charge if you don't know yourself-- if you're just nice or something and it's one sentence maybe just do it for free i dunno? :XD:) send me what you're fluent in or whatnot. If you're not fluent but can still do it, let me know too if you want (if you're fluent though, make the indication ;)).

Any odd jobs you guys do out there that you haven't told me? I got a lot of requests for pre-existing areas but you guys do anything else even further I haven't listed that needs listing? Anyone super-proficient in the english language and grammmar that beta-reads/proofreads? (Script-reading is an actual job in hollywood, btw). I also edit professionally (i'm listing my own crap to get you guys thinking. You'll have to tell me further). Anyone bookbind as a service? Wood carve? Glass blow? Maybe you make 1000 cranes or stars to sell?? I'm pulling things out of the air to make you think. So keep following the instructions I've laid out here and send me stuff :)

:earth: For those wondering what's up with the influx of polls lately, I'm not going to get into that right now.

:star: I've still got work to do on our FAQ and our SALES journal. For sales, you guys will have a time limit, and you will not be indefinitely listed. I will be creating rules to it. And your sale will have to be published somewhere with evidence of it (in written form or something) so i can see and verify. I'm still not ready for sale notes yet, however, please note that when i DO list sale stuff, it will be done in a professional manner. Also, it will be updated constantly to keep people abreast of new info. If you're not interested in the sales anyone is having (or kiribans, or people who want to buy from you, or our affiliates, or any of the standard journals i have, you're totally free to X them out of your inbox :D  I only ask that you read these journals that make our front page as I generally update them eclectically at best.

That's all for the moment. I'll update this again when things keep moving forward. Thanks everyone! This busy blonde is getting to bed.

I think that's it for now. I still have loads more but you gys have been inundated with journals enough today :D Thanks for reading!

A LOT of new stuff. Fo srs. Read. +Edit

:spotlight-left:Welcome and Hello! :spotlight-right:

:bookdiva: Love to the club
Updates!

::edit:: Also, I just remembered: If you were one of the (very few considering we have over 375 official members) people who gave me everything you do in comments (and are thus among the original people listed in the new stuff right now) i've more or less nuked that folder to clean everything out :XD: So if you could check out the journals, see if I did a satisfactory job of listing you or not, and send me anything I forgot or you'd like me to add. Thanks! ::end edit::

First off, I'm officially opening up the Two (and in all likelihood more will follow) journals filled with every freaking thing our members do :faint: And I have a protocol we'll be following now (remember before i said just list everything like a crazy biatch? Well now i actually know how I want to do this and get everything you do).

Or at least, every freaking thing I have taken the liberty to put up that you do. I reserve the right to approve and reject things to put in, edit overall terms for better use, and try to keep things organized to the best of my ability :lmao: Really though, I have the feeling we have a lot more skills (and not just people who do the stuff) out there to list.

There are two journals. More or less, I have tentatively separated things to go in one or the other. Generally, crafty, tangible matters are in one, and theme/1&2D things are in the other. This doesn't mean the divide is at all perfect, and there are definitely overlaps (as there is with all art imagineable).

Just the same, I've attempted to make a difference. Mostly, these journals are for buyers to utilize (i.e. "Hm, I need a pillow made. I wonder which person does it?") This will make it easier for buyers to have to manually search for your profiles in either the folders or the gallery.

You can check it out for yourself :) Under the things our artists do are the names of who does what, and next to the devname is a link to the deviant's profile in our gallery (TA-DA!) Just roll with it. The purpose of these journals are to be auxiliaries to the current 14 folders in the gallery we have. Buyers can just ctrl+F to look for something by term (does it work differently with Macs? I'm a PC :XD:)

I still need to further set up our FAQ and I'm also working on our sales journal. It might look like a piece of cake to you but this is serious major work and thought O_O My brain reaches critical mass near every day :lmao: If you skulk around my own page and see all the crazy crap I'm up to, you'll see what i mean :paranoid:

So first off, check out the journals. :boogie: (and please, if you find any missing/broken/seemingly incorrect links, please report them to me so i can fix them!!)

JOURNAL 1

JOURNAL 2

If you'd like your stuff to be listed in that journal, follow the instructions in this one: [link]

Ooooh new things are here....sort of :)

:spotlight-left:Welcome and Hello! :spotlight-right:

:bookdiva: Love to the club

Hello my darlings!! ^ElectrikPinkPirate here....barely :faint:

I wanted to post this journal like 2 days ago, but maaaaaan i have lost track of the days. I thought last week was the 12th. Turns out the 12th ain't here yet :B I just got back from filming a music video and I'm still pumped from that so I'm taking care of this now before my adrenaline dies :D Whut whut.

You guys might have noticed I've been doing a little work, making some new journals and whatnot. If you've been poking around, you might get a feel for what's in store (some of you jumped right to business!)

:pointr: I'm setting up an official FAQ journal, for what we have in store for the club, what we're about, how we work, what we will and won't do, etc. That is going to take a CRAPLOAD of work so it's nowhere near completion at this moment.

:pointr: :pointr: You might have also noticed that I'm setting up a sales journal. If you don't like it, well I'm sorry and you can go ahead and not like it, but the economy is shit and for the people who actually take the initiative to contact me asking for help advertising, I'll do it. I've been wondering on a fair way to do it for months and months now and a special journal seems right. But that is going to be handled in a very professional and delicate manner, but at this late hour I'll have to get to setting up requirements in the next few days. If you have seen the Sales & Freebie journal, well, nuts to you! :XD: If you haven't, there's a link on the front page if curiosity is killing you, but i'm not going to link it right now because frankly i don't need a panic on my hands from everyone and I'm not ready for your stuff yet guys  If you DO feel like panicking, well, go take a nap :lmao:

:pointr: :pointr: :pointr: I've also been setting up a Contests & Kiriban journal. Why? Because contests to win things are nice, and people who like to give stuff away for some sort of kiriban is nice too. If you feel like bitching about "Why do people put so much emphasis on pageviews? They're not important :rage:" well that's fine. You can feel that way til the cows come home, i certainly won't stop you. I could care either way about pageviews. Woo. :| But for the rest of us who think it's sometimes fun to give away subscriptions, drawings, cash, prizes, etc. for when we hit a number or something because it's sometimes fun, we can enjoy this.

:star: In case you guys haven't read the last journal i posted, (or if you're a new member) make sure you still give me your skills. I have a folder bursting with your stuff, but i know it's not nearly the tip of the iceberg. Keep sending me what you do (please read that journal first if you have no idea what i'm talking about >_<;)

:new: We also have a new affiliate!! :iconda-networking:

:frail: Links you should utilize :rzero:

Happy birthday to us! :D + Input needed

Journal Entry: Fri Jun 5, 2009, 3:40 PM
:spotlight-left:Welcome and Hello! :spotlight-right:

:bookdiva: Love to the club

Hello my darlings!! ^ElectrikPinkPirate here droppin' in to tell you that the club is officially 1yr old :aww: D'awwww. W00t! And it'll be my 1yr managing us in July  YAY!
:iconunfplz:

:pointr: :pointr: :pointr: I actually only have a few things to "update" or at least tell everyone :) And it will require your input, so listen up!

First off, I think we all know how frankly crappy the economy is doing. It's pretty damn awful and I've felt it too (i sell cheap stickers and tats, and even those aren't doing so well anymore). I think it's safe to say the economy and demand for luxury goods (i.e. Custom Art) had nose-dived.

With that in mind, you guys are really reponsible for making your own luck and getting your skills and arts out there. :omg: If you don't have something on your main page advertising that you do commissions, put one up. If it's not in your sig, stick it there. If you're not frequenting forums or looking for work in places that legitimately need it (like Etsy.com's Custom Work Needed area of the site) get at it.

I can only do so much for 350+ people looking for work and offer what advice and suggestions I can, but I'm certainly not an employment agency :iconscaredplz: But i try to impart what i've learned if i think it will be of benefit (check out of ABC's area i keep plugging). After all, what is the club here for if not to provide a directory of salable artists? With that in mind, you're all competition to one another :omg: HAHA Keep in mind, this is a competitive field  But if you possess the skills and determination then you can do something.

:star: Now when the club very first started, the way our members were sorted was by their talents/skills. I.e. Jewlery makers were together, sewers were together, fine artists were together, etc. All of our artists were placed by their skills. This was a fine system until we got a little too big (one artist listed under multiple things was a LOT of info), and then we went by countries. But i realize that even countries is getting too big, and if we're going big, let's just go nuts with it.
What I want, what i need from everyone is for you to put every single little thing you do, every skill you sell and market, listed to me so that I can gather the info and embark on re-instating this old system. I feel that this will open new avenues of sale for people that might not currently be available. I feel it has the same appeal as impulse-buy items. Sure, you were just browsing the club-- but oh wait! this person puts people's pictures on bags?? ...hm, my cousin has a birthday coming up...Oooh maybe i'd like to get something if the price is right! *proceeds to click your info link next to your avatar* etc etc.

This is how these things work. Curiosity works. It worked like that with me when this club was still small. So i know it works like that for others. Honestly, it's fun to browse!

 What I absolutely will not do is list us by price. That's never gonna happen. I have explained this mutliple times and I will only cite that you need look in the Job Services forum to see people selling things for "ZOMG $1 custom commission!!!" :iconfacepalmplz: Art is undersold to hell for the sake of competition and we will NOT be doing that here. It is both insulting to the artists and to the work created to have to deal with such nonsense. If you think I'm wrong, that's totally fine. I can see the merit in listing people by price, don't get me wrong. But it will only exacerbate the kinds of problems you can see in that forum and I will not stand for it in this club full of good quality honest artists.

:iconshockplz:

Okay so super-seriousness aside, comment on this journal with what you do. You might remember me asking for something similar when we instituted the folders system (everything you guys gave me is in the speciality thinger here: [link]). Well what I need is for you to tell me what you do. So even if someone lists a skill you already do, tell me anyway. I'm going to make a list, take everyone's names, and make a crapload of journals (seriously, I expect no less than 10 being necessary :faint: And that's a conservative estimate).

I can foresee an issue with medium versus subject cropping up, and we need to address it because i do not know how, other than being repetitive and listing it twice, that we can handle this. If that is the simplest solution, then so be it. I will probably be updating continuously as i try to shape this and gather info, so bear with me. Feel free to suggest things to me on how to take care of this because this is definitely my summer project for the club and I need input and help from you guys to make it work O_O

Aside from being a dA moderator, I am still only a student working on my BA in film, and I also host and produce a TV show in California, and I'm soon to increase my producing to 2 different TV shows (i'm one girl, and hell if i know what i'm doing half the time!!). So my brain is focused in mutliple areas of life and sometimes I can't think too clearly so i do need help, and because of the stress, i know i come off bitchy sometimes  but i do appreciate it when you guys speak to me, so please please forgive me. Sometimes I get impatient but it's not your fault. I have a problem with asking for help when i really need it so i do like it when you can wrap your brains around things and help me. It's hard trying to do this on my own O_O So give me any ideas!

If you have no ideas....just list what you do :XD:

List medium (paints, pens, digital...), subjects (pinup, landscape, etc), crafts (stickers, baskets, pots, jewelry) or however YOU want to list/see fit to list. I have no criteria. I have thought no further than getting info from you guys so I need you to list to the best of your abilities. So please do! Think like a buyer. That might help ;P

I can't think of anything else to say but, thanks for being a part of the club and helping when you can, and I look forward to this huge scary project! :giggle:
